In May 2006 Java was hit by strong earthquakes of 6.2. Over 5,782 people were killed,39,299 were injured, huge numbers of homes were flattened, leaving 1.5 million people homeless. People from the Yogyakarta area fled inland fearing a tsunami, which fortunately never occurred. The cause was most likely tectonic. A later earthquake in July 2006, off the west coast of Java, registered 7.7 and did cause a tsunami of three metre high waves to hit the coastline. Fatalities were small due to the widespread evacuation because of the earlier quake.
Windhorse, as one of Sumiati's biggest customers, was contacted to see it they could help financially with relief and reconstruction. Of course we wished to respond, initially by supporting the earthquake relief, but over the following months and years to fund the repair of schools in the area, as 148 schools were destroyed and 537 were damaged as a result of the quake.
