Manjughosha looks on expectantly at the space |
2010 was the first time Windhorse had ever set aside a whole morning in order to celebrate Wesak, the time of the May Full Moon, when the Buddha is traditionally held to have achieved Enlightenment. It was an experiment, very much encouraged and supported by our new Managing Director Keturaja. The mornings ritual was initiated and devised by Vidyavajra. Using the newly expanded space around the Stupa for larger collective rituals. The structure of the ritual was based around the story of the Buddha's journey towards Enlightenment, but told through traditional and imaginative accounts of the people he met along the way. It also included plenty of opportunity for ritual and devotion, meditation, plus some choral music and a piece based on a Ryokan poem.
At the moment of the Buddha's Enlightenment, the Stupa Area and the standing Buddha Rupa became showered with offerings of incense, flowers, party poppers and glitter. After nearly three hours of devotional practise, the event ended with a deep collective silence. The mornings celebrations concluded with a festive shared lunch.
